Frequently asked questions

What is the rocket development lab?

The Rocket Development Lab is an entirely undergraduate rocket fabrication club. We have been operating since the fall of 2017 and continue to reach for the stars. You can see past and current projects under the Projects tab.

is this a freshman Friendly club?

The RDL is absolutely a freshman-friendly club. In fact, we encourage freshmen to start learning as soon as they can! We have two programs that freshmen can take, Liquids 101 and Solids 101. Through these programs, students can receive their Red Team certifications and their Mix certifications.

what is the difference between a solid and a liquid?

A solid is a pre mixed motor with fuel and oxidizer that can be formed into any shape, stored and fired when necessary.

A liquid uses two liquid propellants, usually fuel and oxygen and mixes and combusts them in a combustion chamber.

what is the difference between the testing personnel?

Solids:

CST: The conductor of solids testing is able to set up and run solid motor tests.

Pyro: A person who is tasked with handling the ignition charge

Tech: A person who will assist with assembling the motors and anything that deals with propellants

Liquids:

TCON: They are responsible for the test and personnel safety. They operate all valves through a control box and monitor all aspects of any flight vehicles or rocket engines, such as tank pressures, system pressures, and how the overall system is performing.

DAQ/DAC: They control data collection, helping teams understand their performance throughout the entire testing process and streamlining their path toward improvement.

Red Team: Red Team members physically work with the test stand and perform many tasks including checking valve actuation, loading propellants, and preparing the test stand for a test.
